Open Spaces - Synopsis

Open Spaces: My Life with Leonard J. Mountain Chief, Blackfeet Elder from Northwestern Montana is an exciting new book by Jay North, an author, social activist, entrepreneur, organic farmer, and practitioner of healing arts.
As an eight-year-old boy, Jay read about Montana and the native people and always believed his dreams would lead him there. But it was not until 1990 that Jay and his former wife Pamela (now deceased) were able to retire from the organic farming business and make the life-changing move to the Big Sky country of Jay's dreams.

Jay and Leonard's deep love for one another began on the day they met in Kalispell, Montana and continued right up to Leonard's passing in 1999 and beyond. Leonard, a tribal elder--a huge and outstanding figure of a man, both in spirit and in body--became Jay's mentor and teacher, his guide in his quest and eventually his adopted father in the Blackfeet Nation.

Open Spaces: My Life with Leonard J. Mountain Chief, Blackfeet Elder from Northwestern Montana is a collection of 25 stories of Jay's adventures; teachings; camping, fishing and hunting trips; sacred ceremonies, and guided journeys with Leonard, as the two men move together through the Big Sky country around Leonard's beloved home, Heart Butte, Montana.

Jay's writing is in turn down-to-earth, poetic, humorous, humble, and ever lively as he recounts tales of snow storms, sweat lodges, the way of council, the calling of spirits, and moments of profound personal awakening with Leonard, his beloved teacher and adopted Blackfeet father.

100's of photographs included in this remarkable accounting of Jay's experiences with Leonard.
